Over 12,000 athletes from primary and secondary schools across the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State featured at the 2nd Akwa Ibom Youth Sports Festival for primary and secondary school pupils. The event which featured 23 sports for secondary schools and 14 for primary schools which was declared open by the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel while Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung was in attendance as a Special Guest.
This edition of the Games has a prize money of N18million up for grabs for the first three positions.
The commissioner, after thanking other Local Government Areas for their participation, charged them to put more effort and start preparing now for the next edition. In his remarks, after receiving the trophy, the Chairman of Oruk Anam LGA, Prince Ubong Idiong, thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for creating a forum where School Children meet to showcase their sports talents. He expressed happiness and appreciated His School Children for their dedication.
Prince Idiong stated that emerging again as the overall best is not a surprise, but a result of proper preparations for the festivals. The school Children from Oruk Anam expressed their happiness to the State Governor, Oruk Anam LG Chairman and the Local organising committee for making possible for them to display their talents. In one accord, they chanted songs of victory with great enthusiasm and satisfactory display. It could be recalled that Oruk Anam Local government won the first edition of the festival hosted in 2017.
